Your First Steps in Embracing Islam: A Guide to Taking the Shahadah

Alhamdulillah (Praise to Allah),
Congratulations on your decision to embrace Islam. This choice reflects a sound mind and a heart that values truth and certainty. We are genuinely happy for you, and we’re proud of this step you’re about to take.

Understanding Al-Shahaadatayn

As you embark on this journey, it’s essential to start with Al-Shahaadatayn, or the Declaration of Faith. Al-Shahaadatayn (-tayn grammatically means a dual number) is the twin testimony that “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” This powerful statement is the foundation of Islam and a profound affirmation of faith.

A Personal Connection with Allah

One of the beauties of Islam is that it focuses on your personal connection with Allah. You don’t need an official ceremony or a specific place. You could say Al-Shahaadatayn in a mosque, at an Islamic centre, with Muslim friends, or even alone in your own space. What matters is your sincere belief and your heartfelt intention. This is a personal commitment between you and Allah.

Meaning and Recitation of Al-Shahaadatayn

The declaration of faith consists of two parts:

  • La ilaha illallah: There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.
  • Muhammadur Rasoolullah: Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.

When you say Al-Shahaadatayn, you affirm your belief in one God and acknowledge Muhammad as His messenger.

To pronounce Al-Shahaadatayn, say:

“Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah,
wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadur Rasulullah.”

This means, “I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” Saying this with conviction and belief marks your entry into Islam. If you’ve done that, then you are a Muslim – Alhamdulillah (Praise to Allah), who has guided you to His true and beautiful faith.

“So whoever Allah wants to guide – He expands his heart to [contain] Islam”
(Al-An’am 6:125)
